 Analysis Due Date Modified for Wave 1 Participants
The due date for the Wave 1 FPUs has been changed from March 1, to April 1, 2009. The additional month provides Wave 1 FPUs more time to develop their analysis since they were not able to begin using the system for calibration until November. Due dates are: Waves 1 & 2: April 1, 2009 Wave 3: May 1, 2009. The Forest Service Memo is available at: http://www.fpa.nifc.gov/Library/Memos/index.html. FPA's February release includes a number of enhancements generated by feedback received from Fire Planning Units. View the TechNews for more detailed explanation. Enhancements include:
- Planning input reports
- Pump and Roll production
- Correction to the “significant change in production rates” that resolves the outrun issue
- Long lists in the user interface lists now provide for pagination
Initial Response Simulator Validation Runs calibrate the Initial Response Simulation model to represent local conditions. The intent of "validation" is to help FPUs adjust their settings to get the best results as they prepare to run their analyses. During the first year, the FPA team will conduct a technical review on the validation results from 139 FPUs. To understand the FPU’s configuration of data and settings a Technical Review questionnaire has been developed to assist the team in reviewing the results of your FPU's validation runs. Completed Technical Review questionnaires should be submitted through the FPA web site e-mail address at: fa_fpa@nifc.blm.gov with a cc to the FPA Geographic Area Lead.

FPA's learning year, to date:
Most Fire Planning Units (FPUs) are running Fire Program Analysis. Some may already be thinking about preparing for next year. Given what you learned this year, do your FPUs need adjusting? Some Fire Planning Units may need to change their boundaries to correct initial alignments, or omitted data. Those FPUs wanting to change their boundaries should work through their Geographic Area Lead to facilitate the changes. In changing the FPU boundaries FPUs must consider:
- Collaboration is needed to complete FPU boundary changes since neighboring FPUs must agree to the boundary change.
- Boundary changes that adjust the current FPU boundary by 15 km or more must be submitted to the FPA Team prior to May 1, 2009 so that their large fire simulations (FSim) can be rerun in time for the second year analysis October 1, 2009.
What's Next:
Geographic Area Workshops continue! These workshops have been invaluable from many aspects. With FPA team participation, FPU partners are getting hands on assistance on the FPA system and they are helping identify system defects that can only be found through diverse system use. To date, Geographic Areas have hosted more than twelve workshops throughout the nation. These workshops are being coordinated by FPA Geographic Area Leads. The FPA team would like to thank the Geographic Area Leads for their hard work and coordination. As each Geographic Area finalizes details locations they will be announced.
