Fire Program Analysis

Fire Program Analysis (FPA) system is a common interagency decision support tool for wildland fire planning and budgeting.
This tool will enable wildland fire managers in the five federal land management agencies to plan jointly.

The Wildland Fire Leadership Council (WFLC) is a cooperative interagency organization dedicated to achieving consistent implementation of the goals, actions, and policies in the National Fire Plan and the Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy. The Council provides leadership and oversight to ensure policy coordination, accountability, and effective implementation of the National Fire Plan and the Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy.

The FPA System:

- will be designed to encourage state, local, and tribal agency participation.

- incorporates geospatial data which provide the means to map levels of wildland fire risk on lands across the country.

- generates outcomes from fire planning units that
provide information to the national budget planning process.

- will provide a way for land managers to compare
trade-offs between wildland fire program components.

- is a tool to ensure wildland fire management actions help meet performance measures outlined in the 10-Year Comprehensive Strategy.

Spatial Data survey Responses Due by August 29, 2007

An email containing a link to the online Spatial Data Survey went out in early August through the Geographic Area leads. Results from the information call will be evaluated to see where data gaps exist and estimate the workload needed to prepare boundary data layers for the FPA runs. Only one coordinated response is required from each FPU.

In case you have not seen the survey, here is the link; it will take about 20 minutes to complete:

Oops, Sorry! ListServ Glitch

Subscription renewal system fixed. The FPA ListServ was set up with a default annual renewal setting which automatically sent a message to subscribers to renew. With so many people gone on fires, the timing of the renewal message could not have been worse! To solve the problem, we automatically re-subscribed all subscribers and changed the setting so there will be no need to renew in the future. If you no longer want to receive updates, you will have to unsubscribe.

From Prototype to Development

The seven Fire Planning Units (FPU) that participated in the prototype phase of the project will continue to help develop and test the FPA system. Their feedback, suggestions, and work are critical to developing a stable FPA system for delivery by June 2008.

The prototyping FPUs are Alaska, Central Oregon, New Jersey, Northwest Montana, Southern Florida, Southern Sierra, and Utah 's Color Country. These FPUs represent a mix of different unit complexities like multiple federal and non-federal partners, geographic areas, and diverse fire regimes. Thank you to the seven FPUs – we could not have done it without you!

Upcoming LANDFIRE Calibration Workshops

FPU planners in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Kansas are encouraged to participate in the upcoming LANDFIRE Calibration Workshops scheduled to be held in Albuquerque on the following dates:
